How to use the Aeropress.

Whether it's for its unique design or the versatility it encourages for creating recipes, the Aeropress is one of our favourite coffee makers. Not only is it very simple to use, but it is the perfect companion to take along with your on holidays or trips, due to it's portability and compact design.

What you need:

- Aeropress and your favourite cup or mug

- An Aeropress filter paper

- 18 grams of coffee with a fine grind that has a likeness of caster sugar

- Around 250ml of water, just off the boil (94Cº is ideal!)

- A timer, or your watch for reference

Step 1

The Aeropress consists of three main components: the screw cap, the body, and the plunger. Set aside the plunger for now as you won't that part just yet. Begin by placing the circular filter inside the screw cap, and attach the cap securely to the body of the Aeropress. Make sure it is screwed tightly to avoid any potential leak! Place on top of your mug, with the filter downwards. Pass some hot water through the filter to simultaneously rid the brew of a papery taste and preheat your cup at the same time.

Step 2

Discard the water from your cup, reassemble your previous setup and proceed to fill your Aeropress with the coffee you ground beforehand.

Step 3

Now to add the water. (Begin your timer, or make a note of when you start this step to guide your brew). Take a spoon and stir one or two times to ensure all the coffee has been wet. Take the plunger here and carefully secure the rubber end into the body of the Aeropress to create the vacuum, stopping the coffee to drip at this stage. We want to seal the coffee and water together to create an infusion to really make your coffee delicious.

Step 4

After two minutes has passed since the moment you began timing, open the Aeropress and stir once more. Place the plunger back in the Aeropress and slowly and carefully start to press downwards. Do not force the plunger, but aim to have this part take around 30 seconds for all the water to pass through. (If you find it too hard to press, grind your coffee more coarsely next time - conversely, finer if you feel it to be to quick). Once finished, disassemble the Aeropress and discard the spent coffee grounds. Give a quick rinse to each part of the brewer: doing so will prolong the life of your Aeropress. (If you can wait to drink your brew!)
