How to use the French Press.

The Cafetière, or French Press, is likely a coffee maker you already have in your home. We all know how to use it, but more often than not it can leave a sediment in your brew that is unpleasant to drink and bitters the taste. In this guide we want to show you an alternative way to make coffee with the French Press at home that many people in the specialty coffee industry are using, with very good results. The most important thing you need here is time: the more, the better.

What you need.

-Cafetière/ French Press

- Two spoons

- A kitchen scale to measure the coffee and water

- 35 grams of coffee with a coarse grind, similar to that of filter (See here)

- Around 500ml of water, just off the boil (94Cº is actually ideal)

- About 15 minutes in total. (We told you time is needed, but trust us, the results are worth it!)

Step 1:

First pour a little hot water into the French Press. This preheats the vessel to avoid the brew cooling down too quickly before it's ready. Discard that water and add your freshly ground coffee. Slowly add your 500ml of hot water, then leave the brew to infuse for around 4-5 minutes.

Step 2:

After 4-5 minutes has passed, take a spoon and gently stir once or twice to allow any sediment to sink to the bottom of the Cafetière. Next, take both spoons and carefully remove the "crust" (as shown in the photo) you see on the surface of the coffee, discarding it. If you can bare to wait, the brew needs another five minutes here to really become delicious.

Step 3:

Notice how all the sediment of the coffee slowly sinks over time, gathering at the bottom of the Cafetière. We appreciate this method takes a little longer than what you care to spend on making coffee, but what you're seeing here is the way to produce a much cleaner and tastier brew.

Step 4:

Lastly, after 10-12 minutes have elapsed, carefully push the plunger, but only until the surface of the coffee. It's purpose here is to merely filter any remaining suspended coffee grinds as you slowly pour the brew into your cup. The results? A beautifully balanced, deliciously clean coffee.

Enjoy your coffee!
